Bacigalupi does a fantastic job weaving numerous global effects - climate disruption, disease and genetic mutation, energy poverty, worldwide market collapse, fundamentalist uprisings, and aging populations - into the fabric of his story such that the reader understands the conglomeration of disastrous effects this world is set in without becoming bogged down in the explanations.
I'm also in awe of the single, expertly crafted turn he embeds in the novel that all at once illuminates an entirely new layer of complexity - not just in the storyline but in several of the main characters as well; in a single moment, the story and characters - already well detailed and believable - become that much more compelling and fascinating.
I look forward to the author's future efforts.
