  Singularity Sky by Charles Stross
  2003
Reviewed 03.07.2007

Singularity Sky by Charles Stross suffers from barely-portrayed characters whom the reader barely gets to know, a weak plot driven mostly by the motivations of an unlikely interstellar, imperial version of Russia and a rather weak theme. (Overly-censored and overly-controlling governments - or revolutions - squelch freedom and innovation? Really? Huh, you learn something new every day.)

There are a couple of bright ideas here - a coalescing god-like intelligence protecting itself by preventing timeline tinkering, possible avenues of post-human existence given easy access to cybernetic and readily configurable nanotechnologies, as well as the inhuman travel methods employed by the Festival - but they are lost in the dross of Stross's poor plot and theme choices and the lack of any sort of attachment to any of the characters in the story.
