With a weak plot, underexplored bizzare setting, and a poorly-defined theme, the author spends too much time relating stories about fantastic characters outside of the day-to-day life on the spans, and the effect is that even at the end of the book, relatively little is known about the world these characters inhabit, little is actually known about the characters themselves since most of their choices have all been made for them, and there really isn't any idea of where the story is going.
Overall, a disappointing read - not entirely unexpected, but I had been hoping for a little more substance.
