On Basilisk Station by David Weber
  1994, Baen
Reviewed 09.10.2007

On Basilisk Station is a good, easy read, though very, very rough. I feel almost guilty admitting how much I enjoyed it, despite the fact that the characterization was poor, the plot was clunky, and the themes have been explored more deftly in other novels, even later Weber works.

I was impressed and at the same time somewhat appalled at the body count at the end of the novel - if Harrington trashes her entire ship and almost a third of her crew in her debut story, what does Weber do for a sequel? (And from what I know, there are a lot of Honor Harrington books.)

I will, most likely, continue reading in this series, despite its initial rocky beginning. (Whether I admit to it and review any further novels here will depend on whether the quality of the writing picks up any.)

Note: I downloaded and read On Basilisk Station through the Baen Free Library, which was an interesting experience for me.
